UFC legend Jose Aldo reveals former rival Conor McGregor left ‘red panties’ at his door following 13-second KO that led to unlikely friendship and former foe is pleased to see him in Hall of Fame

Conor McGregor once left a strange gift at Jose Aldo’s hotel door, the Brazilian has revealed.

‘Scarface’ was in attendance at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro in his homeland, to watch the UFC’s first pay-per-view event of the year which featured two epic title fights on Saturday.

However, the recently retired MMA legend ended up being one of the stars of the show when it was revealed that he is set to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame later this year.

Aldo was in tears when a video announcement confirmed he will receive the highest honor any MMA fighter can wish for at International Fight Week in July.

The 36-year-old headed backstage at UFC 283 to speak to reporters about his Hall of Fame induction before talk soon turned to his old rival.

Aldo and McGregor shared one of the most intense build-ups to a fight ever as they traded barbs during a two-city press tour ahead of their featherweight unification fight in 2015.

Famously, ‘Mystic Mac’ scored a 13-second knockout at UFC 194 after his overzealous opponent rushed in and ate a punch McGregor had been perfecting backstage pre-fight.

The Irishman immediately told his rival they would have a rematch, but that never happened despite seeming like it would after Aldo won the interim featherweight title by beating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 in 2016.

At that point, McGregor and Aldo were still massive rivals and ‘Mystic Mac’ left a strange gift at the Brazilian’s door, which suggested they would fight next, on the night his second UFC title reign began.

Aldo revealed at UFC 283: “It was just light-hearted fun. We were in [a hotel] in Las Vegas, window-to-window. It was the night I beat Frankie Edgar [at UFC 200].

“He just sent [a pair of red panties] out as a light-hearted joke. I didn’t do anything with it but maybe I could get my Mrs to wear it or something.”

McGregor famously coined the phrase ‘Red Panty Night’ while explaining how his opponents reacted to signing for a fight with him – the biggest star in UFC history.

The 34-year-old never fought at 145lbs again as he went on to win a second UFC belt at lightweight before boxing Floyd Mayweather and becoming one of the richest men in sport.

Aldo lost his 145lb title to Max Holloway before dropping down to bantamweight and reviving his MMA career that ended in September following a unanimous decision defeat against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278.

Now, the man who will make his boxing debut next month has formed an unlikely friendship with McGregor and talks to him on social media regularly

Aldo added: “I do have a lot of respect for him, we are friends. We even follow each other on Instagram and we exchange dialogue on there.

“It’s usually good stuff, he’s just coming out of a big injury. So, we just [talk] about stuff like that. He has a massive impact on the sport but it’s usually good stuff we talk about.”

McGregor wrote on Twitter: “Earned” when he discovered his former rival was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He has been out injured since July 2021 when he fractured his tibia and fibula at UFC 264.

The MMA icon is now fully fit and is expected to make his comeback later this year after announcing his intention to make a run at the UFC welterweight title held by Leon Edwards.
