Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.
We’re starting at the very beginning here with the first player in LSU history to wear No. 0, defensive lineman Maason Smith. The interior pass rusher was a five-star recruit and one of the nation’s top defensive linemen coming out of high school, and he had a solid true freshman season with the Tigers in 2021.
He made 19 total tackles (five of which were for a loss) to go with four sacks. Smith could prove to be one of LSU’s biggest defensive difference-makers in 2022.

Depth Chart Overview
Smith was able to take full advantage of a spring arrival on campus as an early enrollee last season. He saw the field early and often as a true freshman, earning respectable production in the process.
Heading into 2022, Smith will almost certainly be one of LSU’s starters at defensive tackle, and he should be one of the defense’s best players overall if he can take a bit of a leap. Joseph Evans and Jacobian Guillory will certainly be a part of the rotation, as well, but expect Smith to see the lion’s share of the reps.
