Thomas Tuchel has praised the ‘character’ of his Chelsea side after the team bounced back from their Caraboa Cup final defeat and amid the distraction of Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club.

Chelsea scored three goals in eight minutes on their way to a 4-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday and Tuchel said he was ‘proud’ of the character they showed.

‘It shows a lot of character and that’s why I am very proud,’ he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘We played a very strong match at Wembley, we lost.

‘Three days later we accepted a whole different challenge in the FA Cup at Luton, we turned the game around after twice going behind.

‘Then we come to Turf Moor three days later and do it again.

‘We were very impressive and I am very happy because it shows the character and that the guys have what it takes to play for Chelsea.

The club has been in the news off the pitch this week after owner Roman Abramovich put the London side up for sale. Despite this, Tuchel said they have an atmosphere where the players can focus on football.

‘They are focussed and obviously we have an atmosphere where they can still focus on football, which is good.’

‘I think the performance at Wembley also showed that we’re focused on sports. From then on it’s been the same. The team stepped up and didn’t get distracted and were ready to battle again today. It shows their character and I’m very proud of them. ‘

After a goalless first 45, Tuchel said his side was more fluid in the second period.

‘We needed a reminder of what we want to do. We needed to create more problems for them in the back four and find the spaces better. It was still very calm and trustful. We knew we could do better but we respected the place where we are.

‘The first goal helped massively today. It gave us a lot of belief. When Burnley are in the situation they’re in they make it very hard for you. It was very important to stay positive and not get frustrated. We were more decisive up front. The front players stepped up and turned the game. ‘

‘To have such a huge impact in all three games – Liverpool, Luton and today – is impressive. These positions are crucial when you play with wing-backs and want to attack with wing-backs. He was brilliant and opened the whole game for us. ‘

Before the game, a minute’s applause was held to support those in Ukraine but was interrupted by Chelsea fans signing Abramovich’s name.

Tuchel was critical of those who chanted and said it was ‘not the moment to do this.’

‘Listen, if we show solidarity, we show solidarity, and we should do it together,’ Tuchel told reporters.

‘We take the knee together, and if an important person from our club or another club unfortunately dies, we show a minute of respect. It’s not the moment to give other messages. It’s the moment to show respect.

‘We do this because this is what we are also as a club. We show respect as a club, and we need our fans to commit to this minute of applause.

‘At this moment, we do it for Ukraine, and there is no second opinion about the situation there. They have our thoughts and our support. We should stand together as a club. It’s not the moment for other messages. ‘
