Tennis To Host LIU, George Washington For Weekend Matches

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis team welcomes Long Island University for a 2 pm match on Saturday, April 9, before facing Atlantic 10 rival George Washington University on Sunday, April 10 at 11 pm Weather will determine if Saturday and or Sunday’s match will be played either indoors at the Bay Road Indoor Tennis Center or outdoors at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts.

LAST TIME OUT

Massachusetts improved to 11-4 overall on the year and remain perfect in the A-10 Conference with a 4-0 record, after taking down Fordham 5-2 last Sunday at the Bay Road Indoor Tennis Center. The Minutewomen also hold a 6-0 record on their home courts with the victory.

UMass took a quick 1-0 lead after notching the doubles point. Anna Napadiy and Renata Farima partnered at No. 2, defeating their Fordham opponents, 6-2, before duo Mariya Krasakova and Dylan Cannon won 7-5 on court No. 3.

Danielle Hack extended the Minutewomen’s lead with a fast 6-2, 6-1 victory over her Fordham opponent at No. 3 singles, followed by Farima’s 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1. The Rams grabbed their first point of the afternoon on No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Napadiy, before Jonglertrakul clinched the match for Massachusetts, defeating her opponent, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.

Cannon finished 6-1, 6-3 at court No. 6 to add to UMass’ total, while Fordham won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 to pick up its second point.

SCOUTING LIU

The Sharks enter Saturday’s match with a 17-3 overall record, including 8-2 on the road. LIU is on a 13-match win streak, currently, and is coming off a 7-0 sweep over St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday.

LIU will play Friday, April 8, against Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 pm, prior to Saturday’s match up.

SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON

The Colonials are 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the A-10 Conference. George Washington is coming off a 4-3 loss against Davidson last Saturday.

George Washington competes at Rhode Island on Saturday, April 9 at 1 pm, before taking on UMass on Sunday.

HALF A DOZEN AWARDS

Farima has garnered the A-10 Rookie of the Week accolade five times in her career. The freshman went 4-0, going 2-0 in both doubles and singles play, to receive the honor on February 8, before collecting the award again on February 15, after posting a 2-0 record in singles play. The Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, native, tabbed the honor on March 1, after going 4-0 overall on the weekend in the Minutewomen’s sweeps of both Seton Hall and Holy Cross and on March 15, after aiding the Minutewomen to a 4-1 victory at Bryant after posting a 2-0 record, earning a win in both singles and doubles at the No. 1 spot. In doubles her of hers and Vitoria Okuyama defeated their Bryant opponents, 6-2, before she grabbed a point, winning 6-0, 6-4. She garnered the accolade once again on April 5, winning 6-2 with her doubles partner Anna Napadiy at No. 2, before notching a point for UMass at No. 1 singles, defeating her Fordham opponent 6-1, 6-3.

The rookie added to her list of awards on March 29 when she was tabbed the A-10 Performer of the Week. Farima is 12-3 in singles play, so far, this season, and 11-3 in doubles competition, going 6-2 with partner Napadiy, 3-1 with Cannon and 2-0 with Vitoria Okuyama.
