Teams, players to watch at state tennis tournament

Over the next two weeks, boys and girls tennis teams across Arizona will battle for a state title. Players will vie for singles championships as well.

With the conclusion of play-in matches and the start of the state tournaments on Tuesday, The Arizona Republic is analyzing the top high school tennis teams and players for title contention this postseason.

Division I boys

No. 1 Brophy College Preparatory, 14-0

The Broncos, one of the most successful high school programs in the state, gave up just 11 sets in the regular season and earned six undefeated wins. Under Eric Chalmers, a former Brophy player from 2006-10, the team is favored to return to its ninth Division I championship since 2012.

Against Chaparral and Desert Mountain, the Broncos defeated both squads by a combined score of 15-3.

No. 2 Chaparral, 13-1

Chaparral is seeking its first championship appearance since 2016 after one of its strongest regular seasons under head coach Cort Alcott. Led by a core group of four seniors, the Firebirds have proven they can hang with top talent after defeating three of the state’s top six teams in the spring.

No. 3 Desert Mountain, 12-2

Under Dan LeFevre, the Wolves won the state championship last year and will seek to earn back-to-back titles for the first time since 2015-16. Despite falling to Brophy Prep and division rival Chaparral, Desert Mountain won 10 games in a row at one point. Eight of them were shutouts.

No. 5 Hamilton, 11-3

Despite falling to each of the teams listed above in the regular, Hamilton has proven that it can succeed in the postseason. In both 2017 and 2019, the Huskies knocked off Desert Mountain and Chaparral before losing the championship to Brophy Prep.
