KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • South Africa won the first T20I by 7 wickets.
  • The second game of the five-match series will take place in Cuttack.
  • Aiden Markram will miss the second game as well due to COVID-19.
After a convincing win over the Rishabh Pant-led Indian team in the first T20I, South Africa will go into the second game of the five-match series with high morale. Temba Bavuma and Co. chased down the target of 212 runs in 19.1 overs for the loss of three wickets to start the series on a high, and they will now look to make it two wins in a row with another splendid performance in Cuttack.
For the visitors in the first match, middle-order batters David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen led the charge to take the side home. The duo added an unbeaten 131 runs for the fourth wicket and made a mockery of the Indian attack to give SA an edge. The South African team management will hope the duo will continue to excel in the upcoming matches as well.

Apart from the duo, opening batter Quinton de Kock, who finished as the third highest run getter in the recently concluded 2022 season of the Indian Premier League, and skipper Bavuma would also like to convert good starts into a big total. Ahead of the last game, star middle-order batter Aiden Markram was ruled out after testing COVID-19 positive, and he will miss the second game as well for the same reason.

In his place, young wicket-keeper batter Tristan Stubbs was given his debut, but he didn’t get a chance to bat, and even in the presence of the more experienced Heinrich Klaasen available for selection, the visitors are likely to stick with the 21-year-old.

South Africa experimented by using Dwaine Pretorius as a floater in Delhi and that strategy worked for them as the all-rounder hammered four sixes in his 13-ball 29-run innings to keep the scoreboard ticking. And it will be interesting to see who comes to bat at three for the Bavuma-led side in the coming matches.

Like their Indian counterparts, South African bowlers too had a forgetful day as they conceded more than 200 runs in the opening encounter. They will be eager to bounce back in Cuttack and keep the young Indian batters under check. Indian batters hammered the two spinners – Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi – for 70 runs in six overs, and the duo would like to come up with a better display.
