FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 4 University of Texas Women’s Tennis team (18-4) registered a 4-0 win against No. 34 Iowa State (16-6) in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals on Friday morning at the Friedman Tennis Center. With the victory, the Longhorns advance to Saturday’s semifinals (Noon CT) to face No. 11 Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls posted a 4-3 win against Texas Tech in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Texas, which earned its 12th win against a nationally-ranked opponent this spring, grabbed a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. The No. 15-ranked pair of sophomore Peyton Stearns and freshman Allura Zamarripa earned a 6-2 win on court 1 over Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh. Leading 2-1, Stearns and Zamarripa won three consecutive games to build a 5-1 advantage. After Naklo and Hsieh held serve to trim the margin to 5-2, Stearns and Zamarripa held serve to finish the match and improve to 8-1 in dual-match doubles play.
The Cyclones answered with a 6-1 win by Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka on court 3 against UT’s freshman tandem of Vivian Ovrootsky and Sabina Zeynalova.
The No. 72-ranked duo of sophomores Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory on court 2 over Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas. Chavatipon and Collins raced out to a 4-1 lead, but Kadleckova and Cabezas rallied to win three-straight games to even the match at 4-4. Tied at 5-5, Chavatipon and Collins rallied from down 40-15 to hold serve and take a 6-5 advantage. In the following game, Chavatipon and Collins fought back from down 40-30 to win back-to-back points and earn the service break to close out the win. Chavatipon and Collins moved to 11-2 overall in doubles this season, including a 6-0 mark in dual-match play.
No. 2 Stearns opened singles action with a 6-4, 6-0 win on court 1 against No. 61 Naklo. Tied at 4-4 in her opening set, Stearns earned a service break to take a 5-4 advantage and held serve to close out the 6-4 first-set win. She opened the second set with another service break and never looked back while improving to 21-1 overall in singles this year, including an 18-1 mark in dual-match action.
Ovrootsky followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court 6 over Cabezas. Tied at 2-2 in her opening set, Ovrootsky won four consecutive games to earn the 6-2 first-set win. Tied at 3-3 in the second set, Ovrootsky forced a service break, held her serve and broke Cabezas again to finish out the match and move to 11-5 in singles dual-match play this spring.
No. 58 Collins clinched the overall dual-match victory for the Longhorns with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court 2 against No. 95 Kajuru. Tied at 5-5 in her opening set, Collins earned a service break to take a 6-5 advantage and held serve to close out the 7-5 first-set victory. Tied at 2-2 in the second set, she broke Kajuru to grab a 3-2 cushion and won the next three games to finish the match and improve to 24-9 overall in singles this season, including a 12-6 mark in dual -match action.
The remaining three singles matches featuring No. 79 Zeynalova (court 3), No. 118 Chavatipon (court 4) and Allura Zamarripa (court 5) were stopped once Collins clinched the dual-match win.
