No. 3 Men’s Tennis Splits Matches with NCAA DII Opponents Biola & Azusa Pacific

La Mirada, Calif. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team split its two matches on Wednesday out in Southern California against NCAA DII opponents Biola and Azusa Pacific.

WashU recorded a 5-2 victory over Biola but fell 5-2 at Azusa Pacific. After Wednesday’s competition, the Bears sit at 7-3 overall on the season.

It was not an ordinary match for the Bears, who played both teams simultaneously at two separate sites, splitting the team up.

WashU vs Biola

Against BU, the Bears won the ever so important doubles point as Jared Phillips / Gaurav Singh won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, while James Shaheen / Akshay Saluja earned a dominant 6-0 win at No. 3 dubs.

Using NCAA DII rules, WashU needed only three wins in singles play to secure the victory. Singh battled hard to a straight-set 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles, putting WU ahead 2-1.

Jeremy Ouyang gave the Bears a 3-1 edge after a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Needing just one more victory, Phillips sealed the win at No. 3 singles with an impressive three-set win, rallying back after dropping the first set (3-6, 6-0, 6-3).

First-year Akshay Saluja pulled out his first win of the year at No. 6 singles with a third-set tiebreaker win (4-6, 7-6, 10-4).
