BALTIMORE, Md. (April 23, 2022) ⏤ The Morgan State men’s team wrapped up the 2022 regular season with a 6-7 non-conference road win against Duquesne on Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Courts.
It was a special day for Morgan standout Nihit Rawal who was honored for Senior Day and competed in his home match as a collegiate student-athlete.
Morgan State (10-8) improved to a two-match winning streak to end the regular season, while the Dukes dropped to 9-9 on the season.
Morgan claimed the doubles point but trailed 2-1 before the Bears reeled off the final four wins to secure the win.
The Bears team of Sebastian Lopez and Makkijha Brown recorded a 6-4 victory over the Dukes’ Tamirlan Teberikov and Liam Wickwire on Court 3. Morgan secured the point on Court 2, where Rhajzon Rankins and Niles Rachel defeated Joey Matthews and Jin Dassanayake, 7-5.
Duquesne rallied with a pair of victories to open singles play. Joey Matthews defeated Martial Kawunde6-2, 6-1, on court 6, followed by Jin Dassanayake notching a 6-1, 6-2 win against Rhajzon Rankins on court 5 to increase the Dukes lead to 2-1.
Morgan bounced back to tie the score at 2-2, following Sebastin Lopez’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tamirlan Teberikov on Court 4.
The Bears would reclaim the lead for good when Niles Rachal, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, held off Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal 6-3, 6-2 in a No. 3 singles match to put the hosts back on top 3-2. Morgan ended the match when Nihit Rawal recorded a win over Alex Mascioli 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 on court 2, followed by Mikeal Carpenter recording a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win against Kaipo Marshall to give the Bears the 5-2 victory.
Morgan State will now prepare for the upcoming MEAC Championship scheduled for next Thursday, April 28-Saturday, April 30 in Cary, NC
