ANALYSIS: Sam Cane needs to be dropped as All Blacks captain if the team is to have any chance of winning the Rugby World Cup, a high profile rugby writer says.

“The whole country knows he shouldn’t be,” Mark Reason told Stuff podcast The Podium. “He’s not the magnificent player he was five years ago.”

But Reason thinks Ian Foster’s support will probably keep Cane in the role.

“Foster is incredibly, incredibly stubborn on this one.”

Stuff columnist Reason told host Zoe George he’d like to see Dalton Papalii given a chance to show more leadership skills.

“It’s a job that’s been done extremely well by young captains around the world, and I don’t think he’d be overwhelmed with it, he did a great job with the Blues last season.”

Reason also thinks while the All Blacks have “enormous amounts of talent through the team”, there is a very real chance they won’t make the final of the tournament in October.
