Although Manchester United remain one of the biggest draws for professional footballers despite their recent Premier League failures – one downfall of moving to the city has proved to be a struggle for even their most successful stars.
From Carlos Tevez to Cristiano Ronaldo, there have been those who found huge success on the Old Trafford pitch – but weren’t living their best life off of it.
Following reports that transfer target Frenkie de Jong has been put off a move from Barcelona to Manchester due to the miserable weather, Daily Star Sport has taken a look at former Red Devils who had similar complaints.
United icon Nemanja Vidic admitted after leaving the club that the weather was far from ideal, saying that he even experienced better conditions in Moscow.

“I struggled with the weather in the beginning,” he told FourFourTwo magazine in 2016.
“Moscow is cold in winter but you don’t have rain – you have sunshine.”
Adding: “The only thing I had a problem with was the weather. I really enjoyed Manchester, the social life and its people.”
Cristiano Ronaldo admitted during his first spell in Manchester that things hadn’t been easy for him since leaving Portugal – because it was too cold.
Ronaldo said back in 2006: “I like to play for Manchester – better than [I like] the weather. The weather is very difficult for me because you see snow, every time, and rain.
“It’s difficult compared to Portugal, where you see sun every day, which is why it’s difficult for me. But the club is massive and I’m very happy for staying here.”
Anthony Martial finally got his move away from United when joining Sevilla on loan in January, but he had hinted that he wasn’t happy with his living conditions long before.
When asked what he disliked about England a year after leaving Monaco, Martial told French newspaper L’Equipe: “Manchester weather, cooking when I’m tired and English cuisine.”
Adding when asked about what he liked: “Football. It sounds simple but it’s always been the case – I don’t see myself living without playing.”
Carlos Tevez played for both United and Manchester City during a very successful stint in the Premier League – but he was never entirely comfortable in the North West.
He once said in a chat with Argentine television: “There is nothing to do in Manchester. The weather, everything. It has nothing and the problem is I am still speaking very poor English.
“When I finish my contract I will not return to Manchester ever, not even on holiday. Not for anything.”
Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria’s wife has been open about their hatred for all things Manchester United since his ill-fated spell at the club came to an end after just one season back in 2015.
Speaking to Spanish media, Jorgelina Cardoso said in 2020: “It was horrible! All of it was horrible, we went to the house and we were like, ‘See you later guys, we’re out of here’.
“When we left, I said to him, ‘Go to any country – except England!”
Juan Sebastian Veron
Although his opinion has mellowed in recent years, Juan Sebastian Veron said back in 2010 that he hated living in England having joined United from Lazio in 2001.
He said: “I was never happy in England and my time there made me question my desire to continue playing.”
Adding: “England has a spectacular Premier League but that’s it. They don’t train very much and there were no proper warm-ups at Manchester United.”
