Titans win again
The moment they dismissed Russell, they knew the game was in the bag. Alzarri Joseph does enough to seal the deal as Titans win a close contest once again. That’s KKR’s fourth loss on the trot. They could have made the most of their comeback with the ball but their batters let them down big time. Russell almost pulled it off in the end but his wicket di lui ended their hopes. Terrific contest.
What a catch !!
Catches do win matches. No doubt about that. Alzarri Joseph got smashed for a six first up and then he challenges Russell with a short ball. Russell swats it but gets a top edge, Ferguson near the fine leg boundary takes a very good catch. You can easily drop those catches. He held his composure. Tim Southee is the new man. He can whack it too. 12 needed from 4.
18 needed from 6
This is what it has come down to now. KKR need 18 runs from the final over to pull this off and they have Russell on strike. Don’t think he will take a single.
Going down to the wire
Umesh isn’t giving up. He just smashed Lockie for a six and KKR are still in this. They need 29 from the final 12 balls now.
Silly from Mavi
He had to bat responsibly and hand over the strike to Russell. Instead, he decides to take on Rashid Khan and the googly gobbles him up. Titans keep chipping away.
Venky takes on Rashid’s wrong one and thinks he has cleared the ropes but Abhinav Manohar judges the catch to perfection at deep midwicket and manages to avoid touching the boundary rope. Very well done. That’s another massive wicket for Titans. Russell is their only hope now.
KKR were just looking to rebuild with Rinku Singh taking on the responsibility in his first game of the season. However, Yash Dayal returns and inflicts another blow. Saha takes another catch as Rinku gets a feather through to the keeper in his attempt to smash one over midwicket.
Yash Dayal gets into the act now as Shreyas Iyer nicks one behind. KKR are losing the plot here as Titans take complete control of this contest. The pacers have been excellent this evening and KKR are finding it hard to cope. Don’t forget, Rashid Khan is yet to bowl as well.
GT are all over KKR here and Lockie is the latest to strike. Nitish Rana thought he had escaped but Titans were confident that he had nicked it. They took the review and the replays show a spike. Another big blow now for the batting side.
Shami strikes again
No surprise really. Narine was always susceptible against high quality pace and he has fallen here in just the third over. Shami gets his second to put KKR under pressure very early in the chase. Funnily, Narine was deceived by a slower delivery that he attempted to guide past short fine leg. He would have been anticipating short balls at high pace but that was excellent from Shami.
Billings is gone
Wow, that didn’t last long. The experiment to open with Billings backfires as Shami strikes early for GT. He just hit Shami for a boundary but a short delivery from the pacer gobbles him up. He attempted a pull but only managed a top edge.
Chase is underway
Looks like KKR want to stick to using Venky Iyer in the middle order. They are opening with Sam Billings today and Sunil Narine will be his opening partner of him. Titans got to use the pace of Shami and Lockie to get rid of Narine early else he is going to cause a lot of damage.
Andre Russell comes onto bowl directly the final over and guess what? He finishes with a four-wicket haul. Wonder if this is his best bowling figures by him now in the IPL. He got rid of Abhinav Manohar and Lockie Ferguson and then missed the hat-trick before removing Rahul Tewatia and Yash Dayal. Quite crazy that was for someone who bowled his first over in the game. But more importantly for KKR, that is some finish. They will definitely fancy their chances of winning. The pitch definitely didn’t seem to be one where you could score freely as the innings proceeded but then again, Titans were in pole position to easily go past 180 given the fact they were 127/2 after 15 overs. They made only 29 runs in the final five, losing seven wickets.
KKR fight back
Double blow for Titans as Tim Southee strikes twice in his final over. A short slower delivery sends Hardik back to the pavilion and then Rashid Khan falls for a two-ball duck as well. What a turnaround this is. They need to close out the last two overs now.
Massive wicket for KKR as Shivam Mavi strikes. His slower ball results in Miller getting a top edge and that is indeed a big wicket. Rahul Tewatia is the new man out in the middle.
Platform is set
Miller is on the move and Hardik is well set on 63. Titans are 127/2 after 15 overs and they could easily target 60 runs in these last five overs. At least one of these two will have to bat till the end though.
50 for the skipper
Third fifty in a row. Hardik Pandya is really delivering with the bat for the Titans as he brings up another half-century. This is the best he has batted in his IPL career. The promotion has helped his side di lui and will definitely now help him regain his spot in the Indian side one would imagine.
Not entirely sure about that, he did deliver for India
He just fetched a boundary off Umesh with a paddle scoop and tries to repeat the shop which leads to his downfall. Timely strike for KKR but Titans wouldn’t mind either. They needed Saha to get a move on. Titans are 86/2 after 11 overs.
Hardik in good touch
He is resuming from where he left and today, he has an opportunity to really make it count as he gets to bat at 3. Hardik Pandya is the key for Titans and alongside Saha, he has guided GT to a safe position after the powerplay. Will be interesting to see how he handles the spinners now.
Gill’s struggles continue. What a turnaround this is for him after almost scoring back-to-back centuries. And he will be kicking himself today for this dismissal. This was down the leg side and he nudged it behind to the keeper. He should have just left it alone. Early strike for KKR.
Cough – Titans opt to bat
Hardik Pandya returns and he wins the toss. Gujarat Titans want to put up a score on the board in a day game and that does make sense. He replaces Vijay Shankar in the Titans’ XI. As far as KKR are concerned, there are multiple changes there. Sam Billings is back and so is Tim Southee. Aaron Finch and Pat Cummins are out of the XI. That’s a big call but Shreyas Iyer did mention that they have a few niggles. Rinku Singh gets a game too in place of Sheldon Jackson.
Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nitish Rana, Sam Billings (w), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Tim Southee, Shivam Mavi, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy
Gujarat Titans (Playing XI): Wriddhiman Saha (w), Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya (c), Abhinav Manohar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Lockie Ferguson, Yash Dayal, Mohammed Shami
Your fortunes can change pretty quickly in this competition. Ask Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. For the first couple of weeks, it was KKR who were the buoyant side having won three of their first four games but things have only gone downhill since then. KKR have lost their next three and are desperately seeking a win today to get their campaign back on track. And they are up against a side that has defied expectations this year.
Gujarat Titans were widely expected to struggle in their maiden season but have turned up almost every game. Even without talisman Hardik Pandya, they managed to pick up a win with David Miller coming to the party. They seem to find a hero every game and that’s what is required in a team sport. Hardik is expected to return today but Titans would want that top order to fire. Matthew Wade hasn’t fired yet and Wriddhiman Saha struggled in his first outing. Shubman Gill has registered three low scores after a bright start and Vijay Shankar has looked out of his depth.
If that top order can chip in, expect Titans to once again put themselves in a great position to seal another win. As far as KKR are concerned, problems lie in that pace department spearheaded by Pat Cummins. He has leaked runs every game and that side is being rescued time and time again only by the spin duo. Cummins will have to step up today and the same goes for Venkatesh Iyer. They dropped himi to the middle order last game and it will be interesting to see where he bats today. Plenty to look forward to in the first game of the double header today. Hopefully, we are in for a cracker.
