It’s 2-1 and India keep the series alive

It’s a 48-run victory at the end with Harshal Patel finishing with 4 for 25. Not only does this keep the series alive, India have ended a seven-match losing streak (across formats) against South Africa. India will look at the second half of their batting but they’ll be heartened by their bowling display, headlined by Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Chahal steps up

3 for 20 in 4 overs for him. He had a couple of off-days in the series after his Purple Cap-winning feat in the IPL. But he shows his class and finishes off with the wicket off Klaasen for the first time in T20Is. That should be the game for India!

Harshal gets Miller

Massive wicket for India. It’s the first time in his last five T20 innings that Miller has been dismissed and it’s taken a patented Harshal slwoer ball to get him to chip a catch to extra cover. Onus on Klaasen now as India can claim to be in control of this game.

117 needed off the final 10

India got 82 only in their second half. SA now have to better India’s first half with the bat to see this home. They have their two match winners – Klaasen and Miller – from the first two games out there. They chased 126 from the final 10 in Delhi. Can they do it again?

Chahal among the wickets

Gets RvD caught behind attempting a cut. That’s both spinners in the wickets this game. India need a good show from the pair after two ordinary outings. Credit where due, it’s Miller and Klaasen who’ve played spin brilliantly. One of them (Klaasen) is out in the middle alongside Pretorius.

Axar, Harshal strike in the PowerPlay

South Africa get off to a sedate start. 38/2 for them as Rishabh Pant has bowled five different bowlers in the PowerPlay with only Bhuvneshwar bowling two for seven runs. Axar Patel gets Bavuma chipping a catch to mid-on while Harshal deceived Hendricks with the slower ball with the last delivery of the PowerPlay.

India finish with 179/5 after innings of two halves

This stat sums up how India’s innings went. Great comeback from South Africa’s quicks. Used the wide lines to great effect.

Last 47 balls: 53/4 (RR 6.76)

Two drops and a catch

David Miller and RvD dropped a catch each to reprieve Hardik and Pant respectively. But the latter wasn’t able to use his chance, falling to Pretorius, who finishes with excellent figures 2 for 29. South Africa have come back brilliantly. India are 148 for 4 in 17 overs and likely to fall short of 200 which seemed very likely.

India lose Iyer and Kishan

Iyer smokes Shamsi for two sixes but the spinner has the last laugh and has him caught at square leg with a mistimed sweep.

One brings two and South Africa get the other dangerman, Ishan Kishan, who is caught at deep extra cover off a Pretorius delivery was thrown out wide. Very similar to that Pant dismissal from Cuttack. The value of wickets has brought the run-rate a little-down from the 10RPO mark it was touching. There are two new batters to bowl at as well.

Shreyas vs Shamsi this series 17 balls 40 runs 1 dismissal 1 X four | 5 X sixes SR 235.29

Overs 7:10 – Wicket at the end of the period

It’s Maharaj who gives South Africa the much-needed breakthrough. It has come after 97 have been added in 10 overs. Gaikwad is done by one that stops on him and turns. He’s looking to wrist one away but ends up lobbing a simple catch back to the bowler.

But India have plundered 40 runs in this period between overs 7 and 10

Gaikwad gets India off to a flier

51 in the PowerPlay in the first game, 57 tonight. India’s approach with the bat has been there to see even though they may not have had the end result in games. If it was Kishan in the last two games, it’s been Gaikwad too night. He’s hit five fours off Nortje’s first over, a couple of them fortuitous. But that comes with the approach.

Toss: South Africa opt to field

Three in three for Bavuma with the coin toss. And South Africa will field first once more. No toss respite for Pant who offers a shrug. Both teams, however, are unchanged from Cuttack.

Prelude – Third T20I, Vizag

Two games, two target defences on two substantially different tracks in Delhi and Cuttack and both times India finished second best. The series maybe slipping away but India have a bigger picture to build towards – the World Cup and to that effect they’ll be more specific about the roles and how they want to play in different phases of the T20 game. Shreyas Iyer suggested the batting unit will keep attacking even if they lose wickets. They will need such role clarity with the ball. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is clearly the PP enforcer and Harshal Patel will bowl in the second half of the innings. Pant will need his spinners, Chahal and Axar, to take charge of the middle overs. That hasn’t happened yet. More specifically, South Africa haven’t allowed that to happen.
