Live Cricket Score – India vs South Africa, 1st T20I | Cricbuzz.com

SA sent Pretorius at No. 3 and he smashed a 13-ball 29 to set the tone for the chase.

South Africa 1 India 0

So that’s that then. The Delhi crowd got to witness some of what happened a lot in the last two months (David Miller) and some of what didn’t at all (Rassie van der Dussen) as the series kick-starts with a successful chase of India’s 211 / 4. Their partnership, worth 131 runs, turned out to be the second best for the fourth wicket in this format.

Rishabh Pant’s international captaincy debut came in his own home ground – with unforgiving dimensions. India struggled at the death as a target of 56 from 24 came down to just 4 off 6 in the end, courtesy TWO overs worth 22 runs each.

India’s bowling just didn’t work tonight and they have work to do in the next couple of days before playing in another unforgiving venue – the Barabati stadium in Cuttack.

South Africa broke records enroute the successful chase – including their biggest one, and their against this opponent. What they also did was to snap India’s 12-game winning streak in the format, denying Pant’s side a slice of history.

Since Miller has been the finishing flavor of the last two months in IPL colors and has cooly transmitted that to South Africa, we’ll leave you with this interview where he opened up on his season with the Gujarat Titans, his batting and his mindset.

This SA team has won some incredible games against the odds in the last 8 months.

Rassie joins the fun

He was on 29 off 30 when Shreyas Iyer dropped him at deep mid-wicket. He’s now South Africa on top by plundering 22 off a Harshal Patel over. He’s got to 50 off 37 balls. That means South Africa need only 34 off the last 3 overs. This has been some partnership! Worth 97 right now

56 to win from 24

2 from Harshal, 1 from Bhuvi. That means India will need to bowl Hardik Pandya (or Chahal?)

22-ball 50 for Miller

Joint thrid quickest 50 against India in T20Is. Just clean hitting and India are feeling the nerves. 64 to get off the final 5 overs. Very much in the usual T20 range. 4 sixes and 3 fours so far for him!

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has dropped RvD at deep mid-wicket on 29. Will that drop spur RvD on. He’s on 30 off 31.

David Miller 💜

Miller time!

33 off the last two overs from Harshal and Axar Patel. The equation is down to 87 off 42. South Africa very much in it on this small ground. But Miller, who is on 36 off 16, needs some support from RvD, who is struggling with his timing di lui.

David Miller redemption makes me happy. lovely batsman

India come back nicely

Just 26 off the last five, after the first five went for 60. They’ve dismissed both Pretorius and de Kock in this phase and Rassie van der Dussen is struggling to get going from the get go. He’s joined by new IPL champion David Miller. Which is cue for me to remind you to read this interview of his with Telford Vice. You can take my word for it. It’s very good!

@kaushik_cb @cricbuzz With three captains out (Rohit, Kohli, KL) – we still have three captains in this XI – Pant, Pandya, Iyer. Inexperienced, but really a balanced squad. #INDvSA

^^ Lots of T20 experience in there, yes!

Pretorius move pays off

South Africa take a gamble by sending up Pretorius at No.3 and he returns the favor with a 13-ball 29. India are forced to bring in Yuzvendra Chahal in the PowerPlay, who goes for 16. Hardik Pandya bowls the fifth and concedes 18 That means South Africa have 60 in 5 overs.

But India have an ace up their sleeve in Harshal Patel, who bamboozles Pretorius with a slower one and castles him. Even then South Africa have 61/2 in the PP, 10 more than what India got.

Bhuvneshwar strikes early …

A leg cutter does the trick. Temba Bavuma hangs his bat out early, and ends up nicking one behind. There was no pace on the ball as it carried behind but Rishabh Pant dived forward to complete the catch. It needed a confirmation from the TV umpire, but India have their first wicket. And guess what, Dwaine Pretorius – with a T20I SR of 161.90 – comes out to bat at # 3.

Pant, Pandya flourish takes India to 211

55 runs from the last four overs. Pandya finishes with 31 * off 12, Pant made 29 off 16. That means India get to 211 despite an excellent final over from Nortje, who gave away just 9.

5 overs of spin (Shamsi + Maharaj) cost South Africa 70!

India have scored their highest T20 total against South Africa – a towering 211/4. SA have successfully chased totals of 200 or more in T20s twice, once against India in 2015. #INDvSA

#TeamIndia #UmranMalik @kaushik_cb This India Batting Line-Up Is Similar To England Line-up where anyone can Bat at Any Position and Everyone Is Hard Hitter Hence It’s Early To Say 211-4 Perfect Example @ ishankishan51 @ hardikpandya7 @ RishabhPant17 All Batted Superbly 👍👊

Iyer falls …

India’s No.3 falls for a 27-ball 36. The seamers have pulled it back nicely in the last 15 minutes. India have got 19 off the last 19 balls. Can SA restrict India to under 200?

Rabada and Nortje come back

And India get only 13 off those two overs. 150/2 with five to go!

Kishan: 6,6,4,4, 0 and out

Maharaj cops serious punishment but has his man at the end of the 13th over after getting clubbed straight and through cow corner. Kishan eventually finds the long-on fielder but he’s done his job. 48-ball 76 for India’s opener. In comes another leftie to replace him: Captain Rishabh Pant!

Kishan completes 37-ball 50

Smokes a six off Maharaj to get to the feat. Underscores the importance of having a left-hander in the top-four. Great for the matchup play. It’s been a chancy knock for Kishan, however. Right after getting to 50 he miscues a slog sweep but the ball lands between several onrushing fielders.

Earlier in the over, S. Iyer was handed a big reprieve when QdK missed a fairly straightforward stumping after Maharaj beat India’s No.3 by dragging his length back beautifully. For the record, Iyer was on 25 off 12! How costly will that prove to be?

Intent through overs 6-10

51 in the PowerPlay and 51/1 in the next four overs takes India to 102/1 after 10 overs. Shreyas Iyer has taken on Tabraiz Shamsi and already hit him for three sixes over long-on. Ishan Kishan has motored along quite nicely after that streaky start.

For context, India’s average score between Overs 6-10 in the last two years has been 30/1

Not sure what the perfect combination is, but this IS the approach the Indian T20 side had lacked. No longer, I guess

Parnell gets Gaikwad

Should have had him the ball right after the PP but Pretorius lost the ball in the crowd and gave away a six. The bowler comes back with a well-disguised slower ball and gets his man the very next delivery. Gaikwad gone for 23 off 15. In comes S. Iyer!

51/0 in the PowerPlay

A 16-run over off Nortje to finish the PP for India. Gaikwad pulls a flat six and then Kishan adds a brace of fours. Good intent from India’s openers despite a streaky start.

Something in it for the pacers …

Both Nortje and Rabada have bowled some lovely balls. But India’s openers Gaikwad and Kishan are riding a bit of luck. A couple of streaky boundaries and India are 35/0 after 4 overs.

Meanwhile Wayne Parnell bowls his first over for South Africa in five years and gives away just 1 run!

Hardik is going to be a great asset for team India with his IPL form behind him @kaushik_cb

Turn!

The second ball of the game, delivered by Keshav Maharaj, hits a crack and spins “almost 90 degrees” past Ishan Kishan and QdK and goes to the fine leg fence. Kishan edges another one to third man and then flays his bat at another to make it a 13-run start to the series.

South Africa elect to field; Hardik, Karthik return

It’ll be a different role for the returning Pandya, who batted predominantly at No.4 for Gujarat Titans. Karthik, on the other hand, will reprise the role he played so brilliantly for RCB in IPL 2022. KL Rahul’s injury means India will open with Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Meanwhile, South Africa have Aiden Markram missing, who has tested positive for Covid19. They have opted to give Tristan Stubbs a go and have a returnee themselves in Wayne Parnell.

India (Playing XI): Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (w / c), Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Avesh Khan

Debutant Stubbs at no: 5 and 6 bowling options on a normally good batting surface in delhi.

Pre-match read

This David Miller interview by Telford Vice is an absolute treat. Here’s a little excerpt.

I don’t want to be complaining. A good few years ago I asked myself how I could be the best, instead of wanting to bat higher. That’s probably me accepting that my position is to bat in the center of the middle order. How can I win games? What do I need to do? That’s been my mindset over the last six or seven years.

Prelude – India vs South Africa, 1st T20I

We interrupt your IPL hangover to welcome back the Indian cricket team. We will, however, continue to remain with the T20 format with another World Cup looming large on the teams. India, who had a forgettable campaign eight months ago, are on 12-match winning streak in the format, having swept New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka in their last assignments. A different challenge awaits them now. They have a lot of their first-team regulars missing out as they face a full-strength South Africa side, who by contrast, had a very promising outing in the middle east despite not eventually making it to the final four.

So what’s on offer in this series? Result is not paramount – a phrase Rahul Dravid is accustomed to using in the junior cricket levels. India are looking to identify a core of players and roles for them heading into the marquee event in Australia. The return of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik will be major talking points and they’ll have the spotlight shining on them over the course of the five games.

First up, we’re in Delhi. So strap yourselves in and let the narratives take over. While we wait for the toss, here’s Purnima Malhotra with the Preview.
