Crushing win

Won by nine wickets with over nine overs to spare. Now that is called a crushing win. On a slightly two-paced deck, DC’s bowlers – Axar, Kuldeep, Khaleel and co. – cleaned up PBKS for a mere 115. Warner and Shaw then provided the finishing touches with breezy hands.

When you consider the kind of circumstances under which they played this game, DC’s captain and coach would be proud of their team today.

Eventually at wicket

Eventually, DC have lost a wicket. Prithvi Shaw looked to play the slog-sweep against R Chahar but he could only find the fielder at deep midwicket. DC are already 83 for 1 in just over 6 overs. The result of the game seems more or less like a foregone conclusion.

Rollicking start

DC are off to a flyer !! Warner is taking on his nemesis di lui-Rabada-tonking him for three boundaries in an over. Warner also took a heavy toll on Araora, with the seamer giving away 31 in two overs. Punch, drive, flick, you name a shot, the duo have played it.

58/0 in just four overs.

PBKS fold up for just 115

PBKS fold up for a mere 115. And the last wicket summed up PBKS ‘night. Arshdeep was run out on the back of a rather comical mix-up with Vaibhav. The non-striker didn’t respond and Pant whipped the bails off.

On the other hand, lots of credit to DC for shining brightly despite all the problems related to Covid-19. Barring Shardul, all other bowlers were among the wickets.

Wickets continue to tumble

Oh, DC are on a roll here. They seem to have put all the problems related to Covid behind them. Rabada fell to Kuldeep’s googly and then the wrist spinner also castled Ellis.

PBKS ‘last hope – Shahrukh – also couldn’t make an impression, as he was dismissed by Khaleel’s cutter.

90 for 8.

PBKS in further trouble

Jitesh cracked the pull and sweep while playing Kuldeep. For a moment, it looked like Jitesh could take his side of him to a score of some respectability. But Axar dislodged Jitesh to peg PBKS further. He again attempted the sweep but the length was fuller and the batter was adjudged LBW.

Jitesh took the review but the impact turned out to be umpire’s call.

Bowling smarts

It is getting from bad to worse for PBKS. Their in-form batter, Livingstone is back in the hut now. Livingstone perhaps skipped down the deck too early and Axar spotted it by shortening his length di lui.

The ball then spun away from Livingstone and Pant completed the formalities. Some smart bowling from Axar.

Bairstow followed his countryman by cracking one to fine leg off Khaleel. Some soft dismissals on view. And PBKS are four down.

Oh, #RishabhPant is a better WK than what some give him credit for. He has improved. We have seen some fine takes in Test cricket too.

Mustafizur joins the act

Both openers are back in the hut. In a matter of minutes, DC have found a way back. That is the nature of T20 cricket. Mayank looked to steer Mustafizur to third man but he could only chop it onto the stumps. The cutter from Mustafizur doing the trick.

Brisk start and a wicket

For a couple of overs, DC were able to keep PBKS quiet. However, Mayank decided to take the aggressive route, tonking Thakur down the ground and then employing the glance.

DC, though, got one back when Pant took a superb catch down leg. Dhawan tried to paddle one around the corner. Just that Pant anticipated the shot to move across and pouch the catch.

Toss and teams:

DC have won the vital toss and as expected opted to bowl. Mayank is back to captaining the PBKS side while Ellis comes in for Odean Smith. Sarfaraz Khan is playing for DC.

Mayank Agarwal: I am fine now, just getting some protection for the shoe. I am in, Ellis comes in for Odean Smith. It’s more of a strategic change. We need to put up our best foot forward and play some good cricket.

Rishabh Pant: We are going to bowl first. It’s an unfortunate thing, we are not going to think about it. We will find strength amongst ourselves. There were parts where we bowled and batted well. Sarfaraz comes in for Marsh.

Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Mayank Agarwal (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma (w), Shahrukh Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Nathan Ellis, Rahul Chahar, Vaibhav Arora, Arshdeep Singh

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Rishabh Pant (w / c), Rovman Powell, Lalit Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mustafizur Rahman, Khaleel Ahmed

Ricky Ponting: Things have been a bit interrupted with Mitchell Marsh being down with Covid and our session yesterday was pushed back. We have to turn up with a positive attitude and we know we have to play well in this game. With games like these and tournaments like these, you need the leaders (in the team) to stand up. So far in the tournament, Warner’s leadership has been great, Rishabh has been good. We have been playing 35-36 overs of good cricket in a match, just that 3 or 4 bad overs have gone bad. Today’s focus will be on playing 40 overs of good cricket. We know that we can do that, and we have another game in a couple of days time. It has been a stop-start tournament for us, so we need to get some momentum for the rest of the tournament. The players are aware of the way I want them to play, we have been talking about that on a daily basis. Every team is confined to the same situations, we are not different from anybody else. I am pretty confident that we are going to put up a good show tonight.

Prelude:

Unfortunately, the Delhi Capitals versus Punjab Kings game has been hit by Covid cases in the DC camp. However, the latest news as per the BCCI is, “the entire Delhi Capitals contingent underwent 2 rounds of COVID testing today. Match No. 32 involving Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings scheduled today at Brabourne – CCI will go ahead as per the schedule after the second round of COVID tests returned negative today “.

According to the latest information, the DC players have arrived at the ground. Hopefully, the situation will get better and speedy recovery to those who have been laid low in the Delhi camp.

DC are placed 8th on the points table while PBKS are positioned just above them at the 7th spot. It looks like the NRR will play a major factor this season, especially with 10 teams playing in IPL 2022.

For Punjab, Dhawan and Livingstone have been among runs, but the bowling has lacked the firepower. For the Capitals, Warner and Shaw have laid solid foundations, but the middle order has struggled to get going.
