Laredo Next Generation Rotary Club announces 14th annual RotaRun

One organization is about to make Laredoans run for success, as they have made an announcement for their annual race gathering people and donations for its various causes.

The Laredo Next Generation Rotary Club’s 14th annual RotaRun is scheduled for Aug. 20 at North Central Park starting at 7 am It is the premier event of the organization as it helps acquire large amounts of funds for all the causes they have locally.

“The Next Generation Rotary Club’s Annual RotaRun race has grown in popularity within the community and local businesses in the past 14 years,” said David Alegria, president of the Laredo Next Generation Rotary Club. “It’s considered one of the most popular races because of the impact it creates for our community through registrations and sponsorships. It is a service-oriented event. All proceeds go back to the community through service projects and donations.”

According to Alegria, the event started only offering a 5K race when it first started more than a decade ago. However, the 10K race was added years after seeing running trends in the growing community.

On average, the RotaRun attracts more than 175 runners every year, and local businesses have also shown interest in participating as sponsors. For the organizers of the RotaRun, this has been a major year as they have attracted more major sponsors than ever before.

“This is the first year we’ve attracted five platinum sponsors, which defines the event’s growing popularity among businesses,” Alegria said. “As we continue to move forward through this pandemic, we aspire to help promote health and fitness in Laredo, and executing this event is the perfect opportunity for doing that.”

Alegria said RotaRun is the club’s signature event which raises funds for their continued operations and community service projects. All proceeds collected from RotaRun support the club’s operations and are invested directly to the community through various service projects led by the Rotary club addressing homelessness, education efforts, environmental prosperity, economic development and many more issues.

“Through this run, we hope to educate the community on our club’s efforts and how this event is more than just a race, rather it is a community that unites to enhance its resources through service for our fellow Laredoans,” Alegria said.

Some of the programs Alegria says the RotaRun has helped fund in the past are things like awarding over $35,000 scholarships to high school seniors throughout the years, building playgrounds at Las Brisas and North Central Parks, donating over 200 pairs of shoes for children in need year over year, donating over $1,000 to local food banks, raising funds for a local organization supporting children undergoing pediatric cancer and creating Laredo’s first-ever Street Store, which helped provide donated clothes, canned foods and toiletries to over 150 homeless individuals in our city.

“There are a variety of issues our club has addressed including homelessness, environmental prosperity and education efforts,” Alegria said. “In an effort to try to address homelessness in our community, we have implemented the Street Store, which has become a key event where we provide necessities to those without a home. We also donate these funds to local nonprofits, such as our food banks, to alleviate hunger. Other projects involve addressing needs for children in school. We are the ‘Next Generation’ Rotary Club, which is a motivator for us to help our youth grow and excel.”

Close to 200 runners are expected to attend, and recommended health guidelines are expected to be followed for all those who are present.

Alegria also said the race could not be possible without the help and continued support of their own club members like RotaRun Race Director Karen Garza, whose efforts in leading the event have helped make it a reality.
