With the Dodgers in need of a starting pitcher or two, several of the big-name pitchers on the free-agent market have been linked to Los Angeles, including Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander, and Kodai Senga. Each has pros and cons, but LA is likely to be at least somewhat involved in the bidding for all of them.
MLB insider Jon Heyman was on the radio in Chicago on Tuesday, and he lists the Dodgers as one of five teams likely to be in on Verlander.
“I would think it’d be back in Houston but they have seven good starters. … You know the Yankees tried for him last year, and they had gotten word through some high ranking political people that he’d like to go to New York. … I know the Mets have talked to Verlander and I don’t know if it’s been reported but the Yankees have again, trying with Verlander. …
“But Verlander, you know, obviously he’s going to be a lot of money, he wants the Scherzer deal, so it limits it to maybe San Francisco, LA, Houston and the New York teams.”
This might be pushing the limits of “insider,” as it’s basically just, “Verlander will want a lot of money, and these teams have a lot of money.” He might as well have said “hashtag math” at the end. But yes, the Dodgers have a lot of money, so they’re still in the running for Verlander.
