Habitat for Humanity members visit Portage Rotary Club – PortageOnline.com

Habitat for Humanity looked to some of the most giving people in the community regarding their projects on the go.

Fundraising chair Betty-Jean Checkley says she, alongside Brent Froese, attended the Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie’s meeting on January 17th because she believes the group is always looking to connect with those in the community. She mentions they do a lot of good work in the community and both organizations have put in a lot of effort to improve Portage for its citizens.

“There have been members that have been in the Rotary Club that have helped over the years in different capacities,” explains Checkley when asked if the Rotary Club has ever worked hand-in-hand with Habitat for Humanity.

She adds, some businesses, such as Southport, have been willing to come out and participate in a blitz day, where they focus on completing as much work throughout the day as they possibly can.

Checkley says they attended a provincial conference in Winnipeg recently, as well, which allowed them to speak to the other Habitat for Humanity chapters throughout Manitoba.

“I would get to meet with people who’ve fundraised, which is what I’ve done for many years,” notes Checkley. “People who have been the chair (of their chapter) and just people from the steering committees, as well.”

Checkley says she’s grateful to the community in Portage la Prairie for their willingness to stand up and help make their city a better place. She adds the two newest builds have been moving along nicely.

“Brent had mentioned that he thought that (our projects were) dangerously ambitious,” explains Checkley. “I never felt that way. I always thought I was optimistically ambitious with the two builds, even though when we started, he said the costs were crazy, but this community comes through in big ways.”
