ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A Patriot League opponent and two matches against nationally-ranked teams are on the schedule for the Navy men’s tennis team this weekend. Navy (18-8, 1-0) will play Saturday matches at Lehigh (7-5, 2-0) and at No. 39 VCU (11-6), followed by Sunday matches at Mount St. Mary’s (3-7 ) and at No. 22 Columbia (9-5). The Mids will play the Mountain Hawks at noon, the Rams at noon, the Mountaineers at 1 pm and the Lions at 4 pm
Navy (18-8, 1-0 Patriot League)
Navy began its 2022 Patriot League slate Sunday when it posted a 4-0 victory over Boston University. A trio of Mids in Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.), Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) And Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) Won both of their respective doubles and singles matches against the Terriers.
While half of the team was facing a league foe, the other half traveled to Harrisonburg, Va., For a match against James Madison. The Mids won the doubles point, but the Dukes recorded five singles victories to rally for the win. Individually, Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) Won matches in both doubles and singles on the day.
Lehigh (7-5, 2-0 Patriot League)
Lehigh enters the week after it defeated Colgate by the score of 6-1 on Sunday. That was the second league victory recorded by the Mountain Hawks this year as they also defeated Loyola by the same score.
Navy and Lehigh have each played Drexel, Morgan State, Saint Francis U., George Mason and Villanova this season The Mids have tallied a 5-0 record against those teams and the Mountain Hawks have posted a 2-3 record in those matches.
The Mids defeated the Mountain Hawks by the score of 5-2 when the teams met last year in Annapolis, Navy has won the last eight matches between the teams dating back to the 2014 season and holds a 35-4-2 advantage in the overall series.
# 39 VCU (11-6)
VCU has been ranked as high as 39th and as low as 49th in the five weekly computer rankings that began on March 2. The team’s lineup features Inigo Torre Martin, who is ranked 119th nationally in singles, and the pairing of Charles Bertimon and Maxence Bertimon , which is ranked 38th in doubles.
The Rams have compiled a 4-4 record against teams holding a national ranking this year.
The teams have met on five prior occasions, with the first match taking place in 1999 and the most recent one contested in 2006. VCU has won each of the previous meetings.
# 22 Columbia (9-5)
Sunday’s match between Navy and Columbia will be played at Life Time Athletic in Harrison, NY, the same venue that played host to the Navy-Fordham match on Feb. 27.
The Lions have been ranked anywhere from 16th to 22nd in this year’s five weekly computer rankings. Individually, Alex Kotzen is ranked 12th in the country in singles and the doubles team of Max Westphal and Theo Winegar is ranked 36th.
Columbia has posted a 4-5 record against nationally-ranked foes this season.
Navy and Columbia last met in 2016 when the Lions defeated the Mids. That match was the first between the teams in 18 years. Navy leads the series, which began 99 years ago, by the tally of 36-30.
Mount St. Mary’s (3-7)
The Mountaineers will play host to St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday prior to taking on the Mids. Mount St. Mary’s has posted a 1-3 record against Northeast Conference foes prior to Saturday’s match against the Terriers.
Navy and Mount St. Mary’s have faced five common opponents this year in Duquesne, St. Joseph’s., Bryant, Saint Francis U. and George Mason. The Mids have posted a 5-0 record in those matches and the Mountaineers have compiled a 1-4 record against those same teams.
Navy holds a 19-0 advantage in the all-time series with Mount St. Mary’s. The teams last met two years ago to close a run of five-straight seasons in which the teams had faced each other.
