IRVING, Texas – The No. 3 University of Texas Women’s Tennis team had a total of five players claim spots on the All-Big 12 Conference Awards teams, the league office announced Thursday. Honorees were selected by the league’s head coaches who were not allowed to vote for themselves or their own student-athletes.
Peyton Stearns was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, becoming the sixth Longhorn to earn the prestigious accolade and first since Bianca Turati in 2018. Stearns joins a group of former UT winners that includes Turati, Breaunna Addison (2014 and 2016), Janet Walker ( 2000), Sandy Sureephong (1997 and 1998) and Cristina Moros (1997, shared the award with Sureephong).
Stearns, the Most Outstanding Performer at the recent Big 12 Championship, also was joined by freshman Sabina Zeynalova on the All-Big 12 singles first team. Sophomores Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins were both tabbed to the All-Big 12 singles second team.
Stearns and freshman Allura Zamarripa were selected to the All-Big 12 doubles first team, while the pairing of Collins and Chavatipon were chosen to the All-Big 12 doubles second team. Zeynalova also was named to the league’s six-person All-Freshman team.
In addition, Stearns was named the Big 12 individual champion at No. 1 singles with an 8-0 mark in that spot in conference play. Zeynalova claimed the conference’s individual champion honors at No. 3 singles with a 7-0 record in that position during league play.
Stearns, No. 2 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, has posted a 23-1 overall record in singles action this season, including a 20-1 mark in dual-match play this spring on court 1. She earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors on March 22 and March 29.
Collins, No. 48 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, has tallied a 25-9 overall singles record this season, including a 13-6 mark in dual-match play. She earned Big 12 Player of the Week accolades on April 12 and tallied a 6-2 record in Big 12 singles action.
Chavatipon, No. 119 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, has posted a 17-10 overall singles record this year, including a 13-8 mark in dual-match play. She posted a 6-2 record in Big 12 singles action.
Stearns and Allura Zamarripa, No. 11 in the latest ITA national doubles rankings, have registered a 9-2 record in dual-match doubles action this season. The duo posted at 6-1 mark in Big 12 doubles play.
Chavatipon and Collins, No. 66 in the latest ITA national doubles rankings, have tallied a 13-2 overall doubles mark this season, including an 8-0 record in dual-match play. The tandem recorded at 5-0 mark in Big 12 doubles play.
No. 3 Texas (20-4) will learn its draw in the upcoming 2022 NCAA Championship during the Division I selection show on Monday, May 2. The show will be streamed online at www.NCAA.com beginning at 5:30 pm Central .
