Chelsea’s future is still in the air as they search for a new owner and what happens next to the players is just as important as what happens in the boardroom.

The Blues have been drawn against Spanish giants Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and with that comes the chance to face former winger Eden Hazard.

But the prospect of the Belgian coming up against his old side have been dealt a major blow after a setback, Madrid have announced.

Meanwhile, the four candidates looking to buy Chelsea have been profiled as they enter the next stage of purchasing the club.

Analyzing the Chelsea squad

Chelsea have a number of players out of contract in the summer and under current restrictions, the Blues will be unable to give them a new deal.

To the ones that will be staying next season, there’s still a chance that the new owner will cast an eye on the squad and choose to move on from players as part of freshening things up at Stamford Bridge. While there will be players who will be seen as key members of the Chelsea locker room, regardless of who purchases the club.

From goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and defender Marcos Alonso, to midfielder Ross Barkley and striker Timo Werner, every player will be assessed.

Hazard’s Madrid blow

Real Madrid star Eden Hazard will not face his old club Chelsea when the two sides meet in the UEFA Champions League.

The quarter-final tie in April offered the Belgian the opportunity to come up against the team he spent seven years playing for, winning leagues and cups both domestically and in Europe. However, Hazard will not be present after suffering another injury setback which will require surgery.

Hazard left Stamford Bridge to join Madrid in 2019 but has struggled for goals and games due to injuries.
