American Mackenzie McDonald earns marathon win

While some of the bigger names in the tournament played later matches on the court, Mackenzie McDonald and Marton Fucsovics easily played the match of the day on Stadium 1 at the BNP Paribas Open Thursday.

In a match that featured an epic 13-11 first-set tiebreaker, McDonald, from the United States, held off Fucsovics of Hungary 7-6, 7-5 in front of a small but appreciative crowd for the first match of the day at Stadium 1.

The victory moved McDonald into a second-round match against No. 19 seed Carols Alcaraz of Spain.

McDonald, a former UCLA Bruins tennis start, found himself close to dropping the first set when Fucsovics took a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker. But McDonald fought back to 6-6, and the players traded leads in the tiebreakers after that. After Fucsovics tied the breaker against at 11-11, McDonald managed two consecutive point to take the set.
