Abilene High nabs two titles at District 2-6A tennis tournament

James Wellborn and Landon Morris, the No. 1 seeds, beat unseeded teammates Ben Neie and Noah Morris 6-2, 6-4 in an all-Abilene High final for the boys doubles title at the District 2-6A tennis tournament on Thursday in San Angelo.

AHS ‘Kaitlyn Strain and Jayton Aston won the mixed doubles title as the top seeds, beating second-seeded Paul Garcia and Patricio Rios of Odessa Permian 6-1, 7-5.

It’s the third year the senior Strain has qualified for region. It might have been four, but there was no tournament in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eagles will be sending seven athletes overall to the Region I-6A tournament April 12-13 at the Arlington Tennis Center.

Griffin Sullivan earned the team’s other region berth, after reaching the boys singles final. Odessa High’s Nithin Reddy, the No. 1 seed, beat the second-seeded Sullivan 6-2,1-6, 6-2 in the championship match Thursday.

There was no playback.

Wolfforth Frenship’s Caleb Lambert beat AHS ‘Rolando Rivera 7-5. 6-2 in the boys singles third-place match. Lambert was seeded third, while Rivera was fourth.
